Tonsil stones can create a condition known as Halitosis, which is a stubborn bad breath and taste disorder many people suffer from.
Tonsil stones, also called tonsilloliths, are those nasty whitish/yellow colored, foul-smelling, lumps on your tonsils. These tonsil stones are caused by an accumulation of sulfur-producing bacteria and debris that becomes lodged in the tonsils. This debris, which includes mucous from post nasal drip, putrifies in the back of your throat, and collects in what are called the tonsil crypts. These tonsil crypts are small divots or pockets which appear on the surface of the tonsils, in which the tonsil stones may accumulate.
Now, if you do not have your tonsils, then you will NOT (except for rare exceptions) experience tonsil stones. However, I am NOT saying that you should run out and get your tonsils removed. As we get older, tonsillectomies become increasingly dangerous. Aside from that, even if you have your tonsils removed, you will most likely still have bad breath. Why is that?
The sulfur producing bacteria breeding beneath the surface of your tongue, integral to the creation of those tonsil stones, are the most likely candidates to cause bad breath! So, even if you have your tonsils removed, unless you remove or hinder those anaerobic bad breath causing bacteria, your friends may still exhibit those tell-tale signs that you have bad breath!
Fortunately, getting rid of tonsil stones without surgery, is not that difficult...
There are a few select products that I recommend you use that will effectively eliminate tonsil stones without unnecessary surgery. What you need is something that will neutralize the anaerobic sulfur-producing bacteria on contact. For this I recommend a simple combination of AktivOxigen Tablets, Nasal Sinus Drops, and an occasional use of an Oxygenating Spray (http://www.therabreath.com/docs/tonsilstones.asp).
Keep in mind that following a regimen of using oxygenating oral care products, like toothpastes and mouthwashes, along with a tongue scraper, which effectively neutralizes the anaerobic bad breath causing bacteria from the very back of the tongue, will produce optimal results - stopping tonsil stones from ever forming again! Based on clinical tests conducted at the California Breath Clinics located in San Francisco and Los Angeles, most people following this formula reported a significant reduction or complete elimination of tonsil stones.

More commentsI've had the tonsil stone prob for the past 6 months. My Doc has recommended combining 50% of Mouthwash with 50% of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide & gargle 2-3 times a day. Slow process, however, it has reduced eversince. I'm informed that by the next appt 2 months later it should be gone. Hopefully.....

I've had tonsil balls all my life. I think the little stink bombs are GREAT!! I use them against my freinds to get what i want. When they see me digging in the back of my throat, they go a running!! I recommend keeping them if you get them and find a way for them to help in a positive way, as i have..

Can they cause cancer
For many years I have used a device I invented. I put a little (4mm) loop of thin wire with both ends stuck firmly in the top of a pencil eraser and use a small flashlight in one hand and push very gently at any whitish spot I see on my tonsil. The loop scoops out the stone with amazing ease.My own theory is that the tonsils capture bits of food and analyze them as an early warning system for the body. After eating peanuts I will often find chunks of peanuts actually being drawn into the tonsil, as though for a purpose, so I now only remove them before an important meeting or social event. under the assumption that tonsil stones are a natural and possibly useful process. They do eject themselves if given enough time.
Well, the first time I even knew about these was two weeks ago...thought I had a hair wrapped around my tonsil or something....then I looked..I thought I had cancer, but then, I took a wooden skewer and gently touched it...it was soft and popped right out...then I looked it up and voila. My dentist didn't even know about them and then looked and found another tiny one...she got it out and now she's a fanatic about checking her other patients...I think I want to go gargle now...yuck. I wonder if millions of other people have no idea about these things...
Ya i have these tonsil stones also. i got them for the first time a couple days ago. i felt like i had something caught in my throat and i tried to cough it out but no no avail. Then i looked in the mirror and saw these white things. i immediately thought i had step throat but i got a little syringe and sprayed the white things and they came out. Like everyone says they smell really gross
I've had them my whole life. I used to get them a lot when I had allergies. And when I worked at a place that had cigarette smoke. I didn't realized they had an odor until I was older. They come out pretty easily. Just use a cotton swab, that's all I use. Gently push, they come right out and the cotton swab is a dry surface, so they'll stick right on. Gargle afterwards.
Hi Everyone. These stones are really a curse. I realized that I had them a year ago. I met with my family doctor..unfortunately he did not know what they even were! I wanna see an ENT. I think that he might know about them more. If you brush your teeth, floss them, and even clean your tongue more than 10 times a day...you will still have bad breath because the tonsil stones especially when they are forming change the odor of your breath. Why didn't the dentists or all the doctors in general do studies about these stones to find remedies instead of TONSILLECTOMY?
